Roast review of The Better Half
Tucked away on Hove Place, The Better Half pub appears to be the new go-to place for the yummy mummies of Hove (not a criticism, just an observation) and was packed out on the Sunday afternoon we attended.
As ever, I opted for pork belly with crackling which was accompanied by roast potatoes, yorkshire pudding, cabbage, parsnip, carrot, beetroot and red wine gravy.
Positives: good sized portion, decent veg selection, the beetroot was lightly pickled so it wasn’t as earthy as plain beetroot, the crackling was 💯
Negatives: the Yorkshire was overcooked as were the roasties, sadly. We were late in the day (4pm) so had we eaten earlier we may have had a slightly different experience.
It came in at £12.95 so top end price wise, I summarised this as if it had cost me a tenner I would have been happy, it just didn’t have the wow factor (apart from the crackling) for me to justify the extra few pounds.
That said, it’s a lovely little hidden gem of a pub and I would return (they have lots of quirky and interesting art on the walls to look at whilst sinking a pint) and the staff were really friendly and I have been recommended to try out their pies so I will definitely be making a return visit at some point!
